FAQ

It is important to have travel insurance as things do not always go to plan. Read on to find out reasons why you must get protected while travelling overseas:
Easily targeted
When you travel overseas, you become a potential target for pickpockets and other crimes. The chances that you may lose your personal valuables increases with travel, and even items such as passports or travel documents may be misplaced.
Health or Accidental Risks that are unexpected
While travelling, there are many things that could happen while you are away from the comfort of your home. Things like getting injured by falling luggage while on the way to the airport and getting involved in vehicle accidents can be things that one experiences while travelling. Travelling exposes you to things that might raise serious concerns, and it is much different getting treatment in another country as they may not provide the same quality and care as you might have back home. Getting a travel insurance can save you from unexpected medical expenses and repatriation charges should you be involved in an emergency situation that requires global assistance.
Problems back at home
In the event that you have a family member that has fallen seriously ill and you have decided to return or cancel your trip, a flight cancellation or trip curtailment cover will work for you. Having an insurance plan that can take care of your refund and rebooking fees can help you to focus on what matters more.
Travel Disruptions and Safety Risks
Natural disasters, civil unrest, strikes and security incidents can disrupt travel plans at short notice. Before you travel, check the Hong Kong Government’s Outbound Travel Alert (OTA) for your destination, and make sure your policy covers the disruptions that matter to you.

Do you know? The HKSAR passport offers excellent global mobility, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to numerous countries. While this opens the world to you, it also means being exposed to unfamiliar environments and potential risks. Having travel insurance can greatly reduce stress and financial losses should something go wrong.

Here are some common types of travel insurance that insurers provide:
Single trip - A short-term plan that covers one return trip starting and ending in Hong Kong. This plan is ideal for those who do not travel frequently within a year.
Annual cover - Covers you, or anyone insured on the plan, for multiple trips from Hong Kong within a year, subject to a maximum length for each trip. The price depends on where you travel, so check whether single-trip or annual cover is better value for your travel pattern.
Individual plan - Covers only you, or another person if you are buying it for them.
Family plan - Covers you, your spouse and your children. Some insurers limit the number of family members on a plan, so check with us to know more.
Group plan - If a group of people is travelling together, a group travel insurance plan can offer similar benefits to individual plans at a lower cost. Knowing where you are going and what you will do on the trip makes choosing a plan much easier!
It is best to buy it as soon as you have booked your trip, so that you are protected if you need to cancel before departure.
Purchase before you require it - It is suggested by most insurers that comprehensive plans including overseas medical insurance should be bought ahead of the trip to provide full protection beforehand. It is definitely not advisable to purchase insurance after you identify the need for medical evacuation.
Together with flight tickets - You should purchase travel insurance when you pay for flight fees, so that it would be easier to calculate the total costs.
Budget it together with your first payment - Even if your budget covers only the flight at first, you should try to purchase your trip insurance plan immediately after.

We offer access to both Individual and Family Annual Multi-Trip plans from our partner insurers.

Note: Eligibility for a Family Plan typically requires two legally married adults and at least one child. Each adult may travel independently, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Definitions vary by insurer, but a child is usually someone under 18 who is unmarried, or a full-time student under 23 at the time the policy is issued. For family plans, the child generally must be the natural or adopted child of the insured adults, be financially dependent on them, and travel with at least one insured adult for the whole trip.

This varies by insurer and plan. Single-trip plans commonly cover trips of up to around 180 days, while annual multi-trip plans commonly limit each trip to around 90 consecutive days. We will confirm the limits of your chosen plan.

Definitions vary by plan, but examples commonly include: natural disasters; an epidemic or pandemic declared by the World Health Organization (WHO), or a Red or Black Outbound Travel Alert issued by the Hong Kong Government for your destination; major industrial accidents; civil unrest, riots or strikes that cause the cancellation of scheduled flights or other public transport; and events that lead to airspace or airport closures.

Many plans automatically extend cover for a limited period (for example, 72 hours) at no extra cost if your return is delayed by events such as natural disasters, epidemics, civil unrest or airspace closures. Please check your policy or contact us for details.

Making a claim is not as difficult as it may seem, and it can lighten the burden of lost baggage or a cancelled trip. Insurers have clear guidelines on how to claim refunds on charges and fees that have been incurred during the trip that is covered under the policy. Reading these steps can help you easily get your claim acknowledged and approved so that you can get your travel insurance company refund:
Submit claims before the time limit
There is a time limit in which you can notify your insurers of your claim. Check the time limit in your policy, and contact your insurer or ION as soon as possible after the incident, as other procedures may need to be completed.
Accurately fill out the claims form
Ensure that the details provided on the claims form from your insurer are accurate, and be aware of what you are claiming for, such as post trip medical expenses or rental vehicle excess cover, as each cover has a different procedure involved. Claiming medical expenses may have a different process from claiming trip cancellations.
Prepare your evidence
Photos of damaged belongings or receipts from a hospital where you visited for treatment are all considered evidence that can support the validity of your claim. Obtaining a letter from the airline explaining your circumstance that interrupted your travel can help your claim also.
Submit your claim early during the window period
Provide sufficient time for your insurer to review your claim, and remember to get an acknowledgement receipt for it. If you think there is no response after a period of time, contact your insurer and inform them on what causes the delay. They may need other supporting documents to pursue the process.
Prepare for the possibility of an appeal
You might need to make an appeal for the insurer to reconsider your claim if they judged the circumstance differently. Make sure you have sufficient information and proof to support your claim.
