The original certificate of insurance.
Proof of the vehicle's sale or de-registration, such as:
- A copy of the Notice of Transfer(TD25 form) available from the Transport Department.
- Or a copy of the de-registration confirmationfrom the Transport Department.
The cancellation will usually take effect from the date the vehicle was sold or de-registered, provided we receive the required documents. It is important to do this promptly, as you may be eligible for a refund of the unused portion of your premium, minus any administrative fees.
Please send your cancellation request and documents directly to your insurer.
A: Most car insurance policies in Hong Kong provide coverage only within the SAR. However, some comprehensive plans may include:
Limited coverage in mainland China (e.g., short trips to Guangdong) if pre-approved.
Rental car protection abroad (varies by insurer).
Always check your policy details or contact us to confirm coverage before driving overseas.
If the car accident happens within the insured geographical area of your policy, a police report is required from the country where it happened. When you return to HK, you are required to report the accident to any of the insurer-approved reporting centres with the police report you have made.
If you get into an accident and fail to provide an accurate and truthful statement, the insurance company can refuse coverage if it's found that there was false information.
Lack of Cooperation
Refusing to cooperate with the insurance company or failing to provide relevant information during an investigation may result in a denied claim.
Driving Under the Influence
The policy will not cover any incidents resulting from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Fronting
Some drivers may attempt to lower premiums by insuring the car in the name of a safer driver with a better record. This practice, known as "fronting," is considered fraud. If the insurance company discovers this, any claims may be denied, and the policy could be canceled. Even minor inaccuracies in your driving details can void the policy, even without intentional fronting.
Illegal Activities
The policy does not cover any illegal activities, such as street racing. Claims related to these activities will be denied.
Modifications to Your Car
All car modifications must be approved by the Transport Department. When purchasing car insurance, you must declare any modifications made to the car. Undeclared modifications may lead to claim rejections. Additionally, some companies factor in modifications when determining premiums, while others may not cover modified parts at all.
If you want to modify your car after purchasing a policy, check with your insurance provider to confirm if the modifications are acceptable under the policy.
Using Your Car for Commercial Purposes
Standard car insurance policies typically cover private usage only. If the car is used for commercial purposes, including earning income, the policy may be voided unless you have specific commercial coverage.
For cases where the car will be used commercially, a dedicated commercial insurance policy is required.
1.Ensure Safety & Check for Injuries: First, check yourself and others for injuries. If anyone is injured, call for an ambulance immediately by dialing 999.
2.Call the Police: You are legally required to report the accident to the police if it involves:
Any injury or fatality.
Damage to government property (e.g., lampposts, railings).
A foreign vehicle (e.g., with a license plate from Mainland China or Macau).
Dial 999 to report the incident. For accidents involving only minor vehicle damage and no injuries, the police may advise you to exchange details and proceed to a reporting centre.
3.Gather Evidence:
Take photographs: Capture multiple angles showing the overall scene, the position of all vehicles, close-ups of all damages (with license plates visible), road conditions, traffic signs, and skid marks.
Save dashcam footage: This is crucial evidence for determining fault.
Note down details: Record the date, time, weather, and road conditions.
4.Exchange Information: Calmly exchange the following details with the other driver(s) involved:
- Full Name
- Contact Phone Number
- Insurance Company and Policy Number
- Vehicle Registration Number
- Driver's License Number
5.Do Not Admit Liability: Even if you believe you are at fault, do not admit guilt or promise to pay for damages at the scene. Liability is a complex matter to be determined by the insurers and police.
After Leaving the Scene
1.Report to the Police: If the police attended the scene, they will give you a case number. If not, and the accident is reportable, you must report it at a Police Reporting Centre within 24 hours. You will need the other vehicle's details to do this.
2.Notify Your Insurance Company: You must inform your insurer of the accident as soon as possible, typically within 24 to 72 hours, even if you do not intend to make a claim. Failure to report promptly could void your policy or affect your No-Claim Discount.
3.Submit Your Claim:
- Complete your insurer's Motor Accident Report Form.
- Provide all evidence collected (photos, video, police report number).
- Do not proceed with repairs without your insurer's authorization, as they will need to assess the damage first. They will direct you to an approved workshop.
Important Note: The process for claiming from a third party is handled between the insurance companies. Your insurer will guide you through the process based on the terms of your policy.
